Effective Leadership of Curriculum and Assessment – Secondary

February 14, 2023
9.30am – 1pm

This half -day course is for primary and secondary headteachers, senior and middle leaders in schools who design and implement curriculum and assessment. It is also intended for those who advise on curriculum; education advisers, LA advisers, MAT CEOs. Designing a curriculum means establishing the Intent (Values and Vision), Implementation (Pedagogy and Assessment) and Impact (Pupils’ Progress and Learning Standards). To do this we need to know what works best in the context of each school and pupil profile. The second part of this course will focus on ‘Evaluating the Impact of Curriculum on Pupils’ Learning and Standards of work (SI02)

Who is this training for?

This is applicable to professionals working both with individual educational institutions (Associate Level) and groups of schools/academies (Senior Associate Level).

Supporting schools in effective curriculum and assessment is for primary and secondary principals who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding so they can optimise progress and outcomes for all pupil groups. These include pupils with literacy/language barriers, special education needs, and the More Able.

What will I learn from this course?

This course focuses on Intent and Implementation. We outline curriculum mapping, sequencing and assessment within the context of challenges faced by schools; students’ learning gaps and mental well-being. Through a focus on case studies using a variety of adaptive teaching strategies and techniques, including digital tools, we look at how schools strengthen pupils’ ‘knowledge and skills recall’, so they can achieve their full academic potential. Strengthening primary and secondary schools’ formative assessment systems through ‘powerful teacher feedback’ for pupils is key. This enables pupils to take responsibility for their own learning and to move away from right/wrong answers towards cognitive process and self-reflection.

Most importantly, we examine how schools fully integrate skills into the knowledge- led curriculum, thereby ensuring that all pupils develop oracy, critical and conceptual thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills in line with the CCEA and the National Curriculum.

How will we arrive at this?

A practical handbook with templates and examples accompanies the course; including a template for a curriculum learning journey. Alongside the trainer Primary and secondary school leaders contribute to the workshop through practical case studies on how they make the theoretical concepts underlying curriculum mapping, such as ‘sequencing’ and ‘interleaving’ work for them. We illustrate how we can construct a knowledge and skills- based approach to learning that benefits all primary and secondary pupils. Best practice in teaching/ learning /assessment and Interactive resources are discussed through group work. Our aim is to ensure that the curriculum is diverse, inclusive and equitable, all pupil groups needs are met, combining ample opportunity for students’ cultural capital .

What will I get from the programme?

Our primary and secondary focused workshops provides a school leader with a clear, practical framework and illustrative examples on supporting curriculum planning and assessment implementation in both settings.

Participants will have a broader understanding of the theory and the actual practice; they will be more confident in using a range of practical strategies to support and work within a school setting in:

· Establishing the overarching Intent Vision and Values that underpin the curriculum and how this links to departmental implementation

· Curriculum mapping and cross-curricular mapping with knowledge and skills: ensuring breadth and depth in learning

· Ensuring subject knowledge and skills ‘recall’ and covering learning gaps

· Assessment and ‘powerful feedback’ that enables secure mapping of pupils’ progress against their starting points

· Applying the Module of Learning to the Leadership and Advisory Role and Organisational Development
