IMPLEMENTING EFFECTIVE CURRICULA AND ASSESSMENT SYSTEMS (OD02)

Who is this training for? 

Supporting schools in effective curricula and assessment is for advisers and leaders who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of optimising outcomes for all pupil groups, through best practice. This is applicable to professionals working both with individual educational institutions (Associate Level) and groups of schools/academies (Senior Associate Level). 

What is the problem we are trying to solve? 

The debate between a knowledge or skills led curriculum continues, along with how we should assess outcomes at 16. This has been exacerbated by periods of absence from school associated with Covid-19, as well as two years of GCSEs, not uniquely assessed through examinations. Schools are facing a third year of setting a curriculum, with uncertainly around assessment systems.  

The training focuses on strengthening a school’s internal assessment systems through secure moderation. Most importantly, we examine how schools fully integrate skills into the knowledge- led curriculum, thereby ensuring that all pupils develop oracy, critical and conceptual thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills.  

How will we arrive at this? 

A practical handbook with templates and examples accompanies the course. This includes a template for a curriculum review for advisers and school leaders. With reference to case studies and key theoretical concepts underlying curriculum mapping, such as ‘sequencing’ and ‘interleaving’, we illustrate how we can construct a knowledge and skills- based approach to learning that benefits all pupils. Interactive sessions are supported through group work.  

Best practice in remote learning/ blended/ hybrid learning is shared along with different assessments and secure moderation.  These ensure that all pupil groups needs are met, combining ample opportunity for students’ cultural capital. 

What will I get from the programme? 

Our workshop provides an adviser or school leader with a clear, practical framework with illustrative examples on supporting curriculum planning and assessment implementation.  

Participants will have a broader understanding of the theory and the actual practice; they will be more confident in using a range of practical strategies to support and work with schools in: 

  • Establishing the overarching principles of the curriculum and how this links to departmental implementation  
  • Curriculum mapping and cross-curricular mapping: ensuring breadth and depth in learning (11-19) 
  • A Curriculum Charter with knowledge and skills implemented through blended/hybrid learning  
  • Assessment that enables secure mapping of pupils’ progress against their starting points   
  • Applying the Module of Learning to the Leadership and Advisory Role 

Who is delivering the training?

The course trainers are Meena Kumari Wood and Nick Haddon, authors of the popular ‘Secondary Curriculum Transformed; Enabling All to Achieve’ (Routledge 2021). The book has led to a series of training webinars in UK, Northern Ireland and India and features on the core reading list for the MEd in Educational Leadership (University of Birmingham).   

Meena Wood was a former HMI and Principal of a Secondary Academy

Meena is widely experienced and has supported academies and MATs, including Alternative Provision providers, with reviews of the quality of provision, peer reviews, instructional coaching, Ofsted inspection and governance.  She is now an International Educational Consultant and Trainer and a DfE Academies Ambassador.  

Nick is Vice Principal of a 11-18 Academy with a responsibility for curriculum, behaviour and well-being. He specialises in the logistics of curriculum design and supports local schools through subject specific reviews. His expertise lies in curriculum led finance planning, analysing and costing 11-19 curriculum models.

The cost for this training session is £100 for members or £150 for non-members.
