SUPPORTING SCHOOLS TOWARDS A PUPIL PROGRESS QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEM (SI02)

Who is this for? 

Supporting schools in Pupil Progress Quality Assurance PPQA is for advisers and leaders who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of optimising outcomes for all pupil groups. This is applicable to professionals working both with individual educational institutions (Associate Level) and groups of schools/academies (Senior Associate Level). 

What is the problem we are trying to solve? 

What do schools gain from ‘learning walks and lesson observations linked to grades of teachers and labelling’? Do these lead to an improving quality of teaching and assessment? There is little evidence to suggest that this model of quality assurance has a positive impact on pupils’ learning and outcomes? Ofsted inspection has shifted away from this model of inspection for precisely these reasons and the focus in the EIF is now on evaluating the quality of the pupils’ educational experiences.  

The training focuses on establishing a system of quality assurance that confers accountability and responsibility on curriculum leaders and teaching staff for continuous improvements.  PPQA lies at the heart of the school’s educational provision. It establishes a culture of intrinsic motivation for staff and pupils, moving away from a ‘tick box’ judgemental mindset, towards valid and reliable evidence based on pupils’ learning. 

How will we arrive at this? 

A practical handbook with templates and case studies accompanies the course, including a PPQA template for advisers and school leaders. Interactive sessions are supported through group work.  

We refer to case studies and the Ofsted EIF and illustrate how an integrated coaching model for teaching staff facilitates continuous professional development. In addition, we focus on those pupils not achieving their potential as these are identified and supported through this process.   

What will I get from the programme? 

Our workshop provides an adviser or school leader with a clear, practical framework and illustrative examples on supporting the implementation of PPQA.  

Participants will have a broader understanding of the principles and the actual practice; they will be more confident in using a range of practical strategies to support schools and work within schools towards: 

  • Whole school system of corroboration of evidence; (curriculum mapping, pupil reflections, work scrutiny, assessment and feedback, moderation processes) 
  • The synthesis between an ‘inspection deep dive’ and PPQA is focused on curriculum and leaders’ own professional development   
  • How the ‘pupil progress review’ tool supports key pupil groups and individuals  
  • How instructional coaching is used alongside the National Teaching and Learning Standards, strengthening the quality of pedagogy and assessment and leading to improved staff mental well-being 
  • How the PPQA is adapted for a school and across a Trust, for a group of schools through peer review systems 
  • Applying the Module of PPQA to the Leadership and Advisory Role 

Who is delivering the training? 

The course trainers are Meena Kumari Wood and Nick Haddon, authors of the popular ‘Secondary Curriculum Transformed; Enabling All to Achieve’ (Routledge 2021). The book has led to a series of training webinars in UK, Northern Ireland and India and features on the core reading list for the MEd in Educational Leadership (University of Birmingham).   

Meena Wood was a former HMI and Principal of a Secondary Academy.   

Meena is widely experienced and has supported academies and MATs, including Alternative Provision providers, with reviews of the quality of provision, peer reviews, instructional coaching, Ofsted inspection and governance.  She is an International Educational Consultant, Trainer and a DfE Academies Ambassador.  

Nick is Vice Principal of a 11-18 Academy with a responsibility for curriculum, behaviour and well-being. He specialises in the logistics of curriculum design and supports local schools through subject specific reviews. His expertise lies in curriculum led finance planning, analysing and costing 11-19 curriculum models.

The cost of this training session is £100 for members, or £150 for non-members.
